Our School

Severn Avenue PS

We acknowledge that our learning is taking place on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory. We thank the Algonquin Nation for hosting us and recognize their enduring presence on this land.

Our School

Severn Avenue Public School is a French Immersion Centre located in the Queensway Terrace Community of the Carling/Pinecrest area. We are proud to be a culturally diverse school. Ours is a school where students want to learn, teachers want to teach, and parents want to send their children. We have wonderful students, families, and a dedicated staff who work tirelessly each day to maximize learning in an environment of mutual respect and shared responsibility. Severn has a “Balanced School Day” schedule aimed at maximizing learning time for our students.

The large schoolyard contains both paved and grassy areas with a play structure, a ball diamond, and two soccer fields. Basketball courts are located on both ends of the yard. There is a separate fenced playground for the kindergarten children with an age appropriate play structure. Our school is comprised of 8 classrooms, a gym with a stage and kitchen area, a library, four kindergarten rooms, an EarlyON Centre and a REKSAP Centre for Early Learning.

Our Students

Severn Avenue Public School has a population of approximately 210 students in Junior Kindergarten/Year 1 to Grade 5 classes. Most of the students live in the area around the school, west of Pinecrest Road and both north and south of Carling Avenue. Our students speak many languages in addition to English. Some of our families are new to our country. The rich multicultural community that we serve is reflected in our classrooms, programs and activities, and enriches all of us. Currently our school is Kindergarten to Grade 5 but each year we will be adding a grade.  2020-2021 will add grade 6. At that time, if the program is viable, there is a possibility of adding grade 7 and 8.

Our Staff

Severn has a dedicated staff working together with students and parents to offer a supportive, positive learning environment for our students. Severn has a teaching staff of 15, as well as one Educational Assistant and three Early Childhood Educators who work in partnership with our teachers. Severn also has a proud principal, a part-time library technician, two office staff, and three custodians. Our teachers work together in teams to plan instruction and activities to help our students learn and grow. At Severn, we believe that all children can learn. It is our mission to ensure that your child is well supported and has every opportunity to progress as far as he or she can.

Our Community

Severn’s School Council meets once each month. This core group is interested in connecting with the larger parent community. Having an active School Council is of benefit to the children and their parents. Also of benefit to our staff and students are many partnerships with fine organizations including: The Kiwanis Club, The Ottawa Network for Education, Ottawa Reads, Algonquin College, Big Brothers and Sisters of Ottawa, and the Education Foundation, to name a few. We are grateful for their kind support.

Mission Statement

Our vision is to create a safe school where students, staff and members of the community feel valued and welcomed. We strive to help all students experience success through creative purposeful planning that is motivating to students and meets their individual needs. We are always working towards using best practices to positively impact students’ social, emotional, academic (cognitive) and physical growth.
