Our School

Our School

Severn Avenue Public School is located in the Queensway Terrace Community of the Carling/Pinecrest area. We are proud to be a culturally diverse school. Ours is a school where students want to learn, teachers want to teach, and parents want to send their children. We have wonderful students, families, and a dedicated staff who work tirelessly each day to maximize learning in an environment of mutual respect and shared responsibility.Severn has a “Balanced School Day” schedule aimed at maximizing learning time for our students.

The large schoolyard contains both paved and grassy areas with a play structure, a ball diamond, and two soccer fields.Basketball courts are located in both the Primary and Junior areas of the yard and lines for playground games have been painted on the pavement. There is a separate fenced playground for the kindergarten children with a brand new structure for children to enjoy. Our school is comprised of 10 classrooms, a gym with a stage and kitchen area, a library, two large kindergarten rooms, a computer lab, a Parenting and Family Literacy Centre, and a REKSAP Centre for Early Learning.

Our Students

Severn Avenue Public School has a population of approximately 200 students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 classes. Most of the students live west of Pinecrest Road, both north and south of Carling Avenue; however, new families continue to move into homes in our immediate neighbourhood. Our students speak approximately 25 languages in addition to English. Many of their families are new to our country. The rich multicultural community that we serve is reflected in our classrooms, programs and activities, and enriches all of us. Students may choose Middle French Immersion offered at D. Roy Kennedy Public School starting in grade 4. Our Grade 6 students attend either D. Roy Kennedy or Pinecrest Public School for Grades 7 and 8, and then go on to Woodroffe High School.

Our Staff

Severn has a dedicated staff working together with students and parents to offer a supportive, positive learning environment for our students. Severn has a teaching staff of 15, as well as two Educational Assistants who work in partnership with our teachers. Severn also has a proud principal, a part-time library technician, two office staff, and two custodians. Our teachers work together in teams to plan instruction and activities to help our students learn and grow. At Severn, we believe that all children can learn. It is our mission to ensure that your child is well supported and has every opportunity to progress as far as he or she can.

Our Community

Severn’s School Council meets once each month. This core group is interested in connecting with the larger parent community. To that end, our Council meetings have rotated among Community Houses in Britannia Woods and Michele Heights and the school itself. Having an active School Council is of benefit to the children and their parents. Also of benefit to our staff and students are many partnerships with fine organizations including: The Kiwanis Club, Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E), The Ottawa Network for Education, Ottawa Reads, OC Transpo, Woodroffe High School, Algonquin College, Big Brothers and Sisters of Ottawa, and the Pinecrest - Queensway Community Health Centre, to name a few. We are grateful for their kind support.

Mission Statement

Our vision is to create a safe school where students, school personnel and members of the community feel valued and welcomed. We strive to help all students experience success through creative purposeful planning that is motivating to students and meets their individual needs. We are always working towards using best practices to positively impact students’ social, emotional, academic (cognitive) and physical growth.

English as a Second Language pupils are assessed at the central Family Reception Centre before registering at Severn. ESL and classroom teachers support our language learners according to their needs. ESL student progress is tracked carefully to provide appropriate instruction.
